The Bolinas Ridge 1 is the most affordable bike in Marin's Bolinas family, and the honest answer for someone who wants to try mountain biking without committing a large sum to finding out whether they enjoy it.
The Series 1 6061 aluminium frame has a low standover and chainstay-mounted disc brakes, and an SR Suntour XCE fork gives 100mm of travel with preload adjustment so it can be set up for rider weight. Marin size the wheels to the frame across the range; this one runs 29in.
Gearing is a wide 3x7 Shimano Tourney setup — 21 gears from a 42/34/24 triple and an 11-34 cassette, which gives a very low climbing gear indeed. Clarks CMD-23 mechanical discs with 160mm rotors stop reliably in the wet and take Shimano pads, so replacements are easy to find anywhere.
A 780mm riser bar and 45mm stem give it genuinely modern handling for the money, and 2.25in MTB tyres provide grip on loose ground. This one is the Medium frame in blue — well suited to forest tracks, gravel roads and learning to ride off-road.
