The Bolinas Ridge 2 sits a clear step above the Ridge 1, and the two upgrades that matter most are the brakes and the drivetrain.
Braking moves to Tektro M280 hydraulics, which need far less hand force and give much better control on a long descent than the cable discs below them. The drivetrain moves to a clean 1x8 Shimano Essa setup with a wide 11-45 cassette on a 32T narrow-wide chainring — no front derailleur to maintain, no chance of mis-shifting between rings, and the narrow-wide ring keeps the chain on over rough ground.
The frame is the same well-judged Series 1 6061 aluminium with a low standover, and an SR Suntour XCM DS gives 100mm of travel with preload adjustment. A 780mm riser bar on a short 45mm stem gives it modern, stable handling.
Marin size the wheels to the frame, so this XS runs 27.5in wheels with 2.25in tyres for a proper fit and quicker steering. Finished in black. A sensible first mountain bike, or a low-hassle one for gravel roads and forest tracks.
