The Fairfax 1 is Marin's flat-bar fitness bike — a road bike's pace with a commuter's practicality, and the model Wirecutter named Best Hybrid.
It is built around a lightweight Series 1 6061 aluminium frame with a chromoly steel fork. The steel fork is a deliberate choice rather than a cost saving: it flexes just enough to take road buzz out of your hands on a long ride, which alloy does not. Internal cable routing keeps it tidy, and there are mounts for fenders, a rack and a kickstand, so it takes to daily commuting without modification.
Gearing is a wide 3x7 Shimano setup — 21 gears from a 48/38/28 triple and an 11-34 cassette. That is a very broad range for a flat-bar bike, with a low enough bottom gear to climb with a loaded rack. Power CX7 mechanical discs with 160mm rotors give consistent braking in the wet and can be serviced anywhere.
Wheels are Marin's own double-wall alloy, disc-specific, on 700x35mm fitness tyres — fast on tarmac with enough width for rough road surfaces. This one is the Medium frame in Blue/Grey.
